UNREFINED
Collaborative Crowd-funded Publication
RMIT University Project
November 2021
Unrefined is a collaborative project where two groups in the Associate Degree of Graphic Design course, have come together to produce a book and content suitable for publishing the chosen ‘unrefined’ theme. This also includes the co-production of a digitally printed publication that was successfully crowd-funded on Kickstarter.
The concept of ‘unrefined’ is latent, hidden in everyday life. It can be interpreted as organic and unrefined food, or unrefined words, feelings, and behaviours. Nature itself is unrefined in its imperfections. This theme opened up the space for experimentation. It is the sense of not processed, of impurity, of imperfection that has been conveyed in my several concepts below.
The final version includes concepts that have been further refined in development until the desired result was achieved. The word UNREFINED in one of the first three versions of the same concept presented with some variations, has been separated with a dash in the middle so that the letters do not end up in the gutter of my double-spread pages and are legible. Other refinements have been made to the text and typography.
Overall, the process of experimenting, using different techniques in Blender, Illustrator, and Photoshop, including 3D applications, and incorporating them into Adobe InDesign went smoothly, leading to the desired result and a number of concepts that I had in mind from the very beginning.
